Coffee collectors are common in Sumatra, as the coffee is grown by smallholder (family-operated) farms scattered around the Island. This particular coffee is sourced from farms in the Bebesen and Kute Panag districts of northern Sumatra. Purchased by a high-quality collector named Aulia, this coffee was brought to his home for processing. His small-scale operation allows him and his family to focus on quality control, making his coffee stand out against other Sumatra coffees.

During the 16th century, Dutch colonizers planted coffee beans across Indonesia and established plantations, taking advantage of the land and people. The Dutch abandoned their plantations during the mid-1800s when a coffee leaf rust epidemic dwindled coffee production. Local laborers then divided the land and planted newer hybrids of disease-resistant coffee plants.

Today, Sumatra is the sixth-largest island in the world and the primary producer of Indonesian Coffee. The extreme landscape offers the opportunity to grow Arabica and Robusta types in the highlands and lowlands, respectively.

How long will my beans stay fresh?

Whole bean coffee will stay fresh for about 8 weeks from opening. Make sure to keep it stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry area to maximize freshness!
