GROWER

Sandra Hidalgo

This small-scale coffee producer runs a farm named “Las Flores” located in the Paraiso village of La Libertad, Huehuetenango. Sandra Hidalgo’s farm sits around 1700 meters above sea level and is broken into 3 small pieces of land. Her coffee made its way to us through a dedicated program called “Proyecto Xinabajul,” which establishes genuine connections between our coffee distributor and small-scale coffee producers from around the Huehuetenango region.

REGION

Guatemala

Prior to coffee, Guatemala was known for exporting natural dyes like indigo and cochineal (red dye from crushed bugs). Once chemical dyes were invented, the demand for natural dyes decreased, and the Guatemalan government decided coffee was the best path toward economic stability. In 1854, the government established the Commission for Coffee Cultivation and Promotion to educate farmers on coffee production and processing. After decades of dividing up land, educating farmers, and developing large plantations, coffee made up 90% of Guatemala’s exports by 1880. As a result, many farmers today have their own wet mills and production facilities.
