GROWER

Raro Boda Small Scale Farmers

Established in 2018, the Raro Boda washing station buys from around 700 small-scale farmers in the Uraga region of Ethiopia. These farms grow coffee at extremely high altitudes, up to 2250 meters above sea level! Raro Boda produces both wet and dry processed coffee.

REGION

Ethiopia

In the coffee community, Ethiopia is known as the birthplace of coffee. The original coffee plant, Coffea Arabica, grew under the canopy of the forests in Kaffa. From Ethiopia, coffee travelled to Yemen, where it became the drink we are familiar with today. Ethiopian coffees are known for their great genetic diversity and diverse growing regions (like Guji, Yirga Cheffe, and Jimma), which allow for unique flavor profiles. Coffees from Ethiopia are known to be more tea-like with bold citrus and floral notes.

As the world’s fifth-largest producer of coffee, Ethiopia has over 4 million small-scale coffee farmers. These farmers face climate change, long dry seasons, and deforestation, which negatively impact coffee production. To combat these looming issues, farmers are relocating to higher elevations, updating irrigation, terracing to improve soil quality, and pruning to maximize crop potential.
